September is Life Insurance Awareness Month, a time to reflect on the importance of protecting families through thoughtful financial planning. This year, new research from the Life Insurance Marketing and Research Association (LIMRA) reveals that while more Americans recognize the value of life insurance, many still lack adequate coverage and understanding of their options.
LIMRA’s 2025 Insurance Barometer Study found that 57 percent of individuals who only have life insurance through their employer believe they have enough coverage. In reality, the median workplace benefit is either a flat $20,000 or one times salary, which is often far below what families need to maintain financial stability. Nearly half of these households say they would face financial hardship in less than six months if a wage earner passed away unexpectedly.
This gap in coverage is compounded by a lack of awareness and communication. More than one-third of working Americans are unsure whether they even have access to life insurance at work. Of those who do, only 57 percent feel they understand their benefits well. LIMRA also found that half of employees only receive information about life insurance during open enrollment, while 73 percent would prefer updates throughout the year.
At Amalgamated Life Insurance Company, we are committed to helping working people and their families achieve financial security. That means offering flexible life insurance products and ensuring individuals understand how these products can support their long-term goals.
Amalgamated Life provides a range of life insurance solutions tailored to meet the diverse needs of today’s workforce, including:
- Group Term Life Insurance: Provides coverage for a specific period, often through your employer. It can include flexible benefit options, conversion privileges, and supplemental and dependent coverage.
- Portable Term Life Insurance: Offers the flexibility to take your coverage with you if you change jobs or retire, as long as premiums are paid, ensuring continuous protection.
- Whole Life Insurance: A permanent policy that builds cash value over time and offers lifelong coverage, often available through payroll deduction.
All of these products are available to employers, unions, and their members, reflecting our deep commitment to serving working families. We understand that life insurance is not just a financial product, it is a promise of security and peace of mind.
As the LIMRA study suggests, awareness and education are key. Employees are more likely to understand and value their benefits when companies provide consistent communication throughout the year. At Amalgamated Life, we partner with organizations to support benefit education and help individuals make informed decisions that protect their families and their futures.
Life Insurance Awareness Month is a great time to start the conversation, but the need for protection and understanding lasts all year. Let’s work together to close the coverage gap and ensure every family has the support they need.
