Life Insurance

How do I submit a claim?

Please contact your employer or union for claim questions.

How do I determine how much life insurance I need?

When considering the amount of life insurance, you must factor in the number of dependents you have, the financial/living expenses of your household, potential costs that will be incurred and/or debts that will need to be satisfied upon your death, as well as any other future costs for which you want to allow such as a child’s college education, wedding costs, etc.

What is the difference between the different types of life insurance?

Group Term Life Insurance is Term Insurance held by a group – union/employer which protects your family for a specified term (e.g., 10 years, 25 years, etc.) and is simple protection to provide for loss of income, short-term debts and needs, mortgage payments, college education, etc. Whole life insurance, unlike group term, is purchased by the individual. It builds a cash value that grows tax-deferred, and can be accessed during the covered person’s lifetime. A whole life policy pays a death benefit and allows access to built-up cash value.

Why should I purchase life insurance?

Without adequate life insurance, you are leaving your loved ones vulnerable and potentially unprepared to manage certain living expenses as well as your funeral expenses, which can be very costly. Cremation costs average $2,000 and the cost of burial and basic casket average $8,500. If you add the cost of funeral home visitations and hearse procession, the total immediate cost after death of a loved one is between $4,400 and $14,000.

How much does life insurance cost?

Premiums are determined based on the type of insurance, period of coverage (in the case of term insurance) and amount of coverage purchased.

How easy is it to change my insurance coverage to reflect changes in my life?

Some insurance policies can be amended to reflect life changes. Questions should be directed to your employer or union.

How do I change my beneficiary?

Beneficiaries can be changed with the completion of the proper forms. Contact your employer or union to obtain the forms.

Can I continue my coverage if my group policy terminates?
